Do Not Resuscitate

Not a dead Grandpa Jim, but now we welcome stroke #2 for For Better or For Worse. Stroke #2 is pretty common for someone who survived stroke #1. The real question in my mind is: Where is Lynn Johnston going with this? Is it going to be a long drawn out affair where Grandpa Jim gets a death sequence like Grandma Marian got? And if so, then how is that depressing sequence going to work with the wedding of Liz and Anthony? Is Grandpa Jim going to struggle again and recover again, so he is able to make it to Liz and Anthony’s wedding, to make it an especially happy wedding day? Or will stroke #2 magically reconnect all the brain tissue which stroke #1 damaged, so Grandpa Jim is magically back to his old self, just in time for Liz and Anthony to get married?

I am not sure when Lynn Johnston can do the hybrid, deal with Grandpa Jim, and have Liz and Anthony married by early next year.

I also noticed another real life concern in Panel One: Elly's and Iris's not realizing that the pills wouldn't stop Stroke Number Two. The doctors tried telling them that Jim's meds would only reduce, NOT eliminate, the chances of this happening but their knowledge fell on deaf ears. That's the way it goes and it's a part of life the doctors have come to accept: absorbing abuse from the ignorant.

Upon reading today's strip, my first thought was "Oh man! Lynn is surely NOT going to go with stroke #2 will totally cure Jim!"

Unfortunately, as horrible as FBoFW has gotten, I can just picture a miracle so that Jim can dance at the wedding....

dreadedcandiru2,

To me the key part of the phrase was “with all the medication he’s on”. I think Lynn Johnston’s point was to take another shot at the overmedication of the old as she did in this strip from last year and this strip from this year.

DJ,

I seriously doubt Lynn Johnston will make this stroke a miracle cure. It was clear to me that when she started off doing the stroke storyline last year she had not properly researched it, and then corrected herself in later strips, no doubt realizing it was a medical issue with which many of her readers are familiar. However, I have high hopes that Lynn Johnston will do something with the stroke storyline which will be as equally impressive as having Grandpa Jim recover enough to dance at the wedding.

Ah, yes..... The perils of drug interaction. I remember thinking that was what last August's story line could have been about, even putting something like that on CT. That may indeed be what Lynn is planning to address, that he was given too many of the wrong pills. That would be worth reading, at that.

So just like Lynn screwed up the attempted rape story and then tried to correct it, and then with the gym jam repeated with a telethon, you think that is what she will do with the stroke this time?

Wish I had high hopes for Lynn, but in the past few years she seems to just do whatever, and then a quick repair job.
