Faster than A Speeding Farley

The reference in today's reprint of For Better or For Worse to mild-mannered reporter, Clark Kent came from the introductory lines to the 1940s Superman cartoons by Max Fleischer. They stuck to the character, although in today’s world of Smallville, I don’t know how many people would see Tom Welling and think of Clark Kent as being mild-mannered anymore. Or for that matter, would even know what “mild-mannered’ means. Nevertheless, in 1980, it was probably still a well-known pop culture reference. The most unusual aspect of the strip is that Lynn Johnston is making a joke based off a pop culture reference at all. That is a pretty rare event for her humour. Aside from using Shania Twain instead of Cheryl Ladd, the reference I remember in recent years was one to Bobby Curtola. I liked the Bobby Curtola reference, actually.

Not only was the use of the pop culture reference a rarity, the whole story of the strip is a rarity. What happened with Farley chewing up a toy could happen in any family with a dog. That was very real. The kids’ reaction to it made sense. And what is the most unusual part of the strip overall is the fact that everyone seems to be happy. Michael helps out his sister, and is interested in what happens to her stuffed bunny. Elly takes Michael’s concern seriously and acts. She doesn’t get upset with what Farley did. She fixes the problem. Lizzie is upset and then she is satisfied with Elly’s sewing work. I almost feel like saying to the author of this strip, “Who are you, and what did you do with Lynn Johnston?”

I agree--this strip is actually pretty nice. What bugs me is LJ's refusal to do even the most rudimentary synch-up between the dailies and the Sundays. Tomorrow, no doubt, we go back to Elly being away.

This, of course, is one of the problems I have with the new-runs; I know that there a lot more positive, happy early strips where this came from but, for some reason, Lynn doesn't see fir to reprint most of them. Instead of the balanced view of family life that we would have gotten if Lynn had gone to straight reprints six months ago, we get a distorted and mostly negative image of the Pattersons' past.

I'll bet the reason Lynn didn't go to straight reprints 6 months ago is MONEY! Marketing straight reruns is probably harder than selling a strip that is partly new.

However, she's mostly chosen mean-spirited strips from the past, ordered confusingly & updated oddly. And the "new" ones just make things grimmer. Why? Ask her shrink.

(I agree that today's strip is not bad at all. But Monday we'll be back with John, The Dreadful Father, Liz, The Limp Babydoll & Michael, who's Good With Words but can't say "days & nights" instead of "sleeps.)"

How long has it been since Lynn Johnston did synch-ups? Over 10 years, maybe? I don’t have any expectations of Lynn on this anymore. I still remember the timing issues Lynn created with Grandpa Jim’s birthday in March, 2006, where Pattersons at the party were discussing plot elements that hadn’t occurred in the strip yet. Synch-ups are beyond her now. She couldn't even do it right for Liz's wedding.

Maybe Lynn felt that these kinds of strips would match up the best with the tone of the modern story she had been telling, If that’s the case, then she was right.

That is the whole reason. Lynn wants her vacation time, but she also wants the money. The hybrid and the new-runs are her ways of trying to keep both. As near as I can tell, this is the part that irritates the newspapers the most, to see Lynn Johnston do her money grab and try to get something for nothing

Possibly November of 2004, where the first "Sunday" strip of the month matches up with Deanna and Mike being in the hospital with newborn Robin in the first week's dailies.

aprilp_katje,

I guess I mean as a regular basis instead of special event moment.

Ah, okay--never mind! (I realize now that the very last strip of the original run qualifies as a synched-up Sunday--the wedding/futurecast mess.) ;)
