howard,

Even if "Determine a budget" had been checked off, we can rely on Anthony's prediction to come true and make sure that whoever's ponying up the dough for this mess is gonna be in the red. Oh, well. April didn't really need to go to University like her siblings did. She'll be just fine cleaning out cages until Gerald sweeps her off her feet.

I like how Liz is whining that everyone waited until the last minute to RSVP. Who waited until the last minute to try to get married again? Maybe you should give your guests more than a month's notice before you get married if you want them to respond in a timely manner.

lindsey,

The funniest part of the strip is Liz's whining about last minute. To me, it is the well-deserved payback for her extraordinarily poor planning. I wonder if any of the long distance family is even going to show up for the wedding. With the advance notice Liz gave them, plus the cost of airfare these days, they would be justified in not showing up.

dreadedcandiru2,

Are you suggesting that April is paying for the wedding? That would certainly make more sense than John and Elly, who contributed one dress to their son's wedding.

howard,

I'm humorously suggesting that they're raising her college fund in order to pay for all this splendor. Of course, I'm wrong. Since people will just volunteer their time because they think the Foobs are swell, they themselves will be able to spend less than a thousand dollars on this and all of it on wardrobe.

Practicalities like the ones you mentioned mean nothing to mother or daughter. Just as Elly harrumphed in smug ignorance of the constraints upon him that Paul wasn't there when Liz heeded him, Liz will hold a life-long grudge against all the people that cannot appear at the Kitsch Atrocity Wedding. The cost of airfare and lack of time mean little to her because she isn't living in the real world.

Choose Professional Photographer / Videographer. - Unnecessary. Weed will do it for cheap/free, because he's a Very Successful Photographer who happens to have that weekend free.

Obtain Floral & Music estimates; book services if possible. - Unnecessary. Lawrence will do it for cheap/free, because he's a Very Successful Landscaper/Florist who happens to have that weekend free.

Pick a honeymoon destination - Unnecessary. Gordon will do it for cheap/free, because he's a Very Successful Multi-Business Tycoon who probably has a travel agency in his growing empire now and happens to have that weekend free. April's friend, the future Travel Agent to the Sports Stars, will assist.

Lynn simply MUST be doing this on purpose. I mean really; carping because people are waiting to the last minute after showing us Liz's mad rush to get married?

It reminds me of the way Liz got her job; macaroni flying out of her mouth while she's hurrahing to Elly about a woman's husband cheating, so she left and there's a vacancy---whoo hoo!

Between this and the flirting Granthony and Liz did continuously while he was married, sure to God Lynn is aware of how awful these people are? No....probably not. I look at some of the letters on Coffee Talk and am astounded how obtuse some people can be. It really scares me that people can still worship the Pattersons.

It's obvious that they live in denial of the truth. They're so happy to see something on the comics page that looks like their lives they don't care about how awful the Pattersons look.

I am not as sure about the volunteerism as before. Elizabeth mentioned caterers without saying Anne Nichols, so the implication is that they are paying for some things.

The cost of airfare and lack of time mean little to her because she isn't living in the real world.

I suspect this is really Lynn we are talking about here. We have seen her display ignorance with respect to the prohibitive cost of air travel before, probably because she makes enough money so that it isn’t prohibitive to her. Another example is that Liz had the expectation that Warren Blackwood could drop in any time he wanted, since he flew a helicopter, despite having a job in Vancouver. This confused me for the longest time, until Beth Cruikshank’s bio of Warren came out, where she revealed what was in the back of Lynn’s mind (and not in the strip) the whole time she wrote that, i.e. that Warren had family in Milborough and so the helicopter ride from Milborough to Mtigwaki would be a more reasonable distance. Beth’s version of Warren though was more realistic and had him lose his job over his little trip to visit Elizabeth for her graduation.

Now there’s an idea I had not thought about. Duncan Anderson could begin his budding career by doing the travel arrangements for Liz’s honeymoon.

Lynn has picked an issue near and dear to the Patterson’s hearts (food) over which to get Liz into a tizzy. However, she has not thought this through:
1. Giving a number to the caterer is something you do in the final week before the wedding.
2. The RSVP count will not be exact and anyone who has given a number to a caterer for a wedding before will tell you that you have to allow a few extra dinners for the people who will show up without having done the RSVP.
3. Yelling at your mother or staring at a piece of paper is not actual wedding planning stress. Wedding planning stress is when the caterer cancels on you at the last minute.

Between this and the flirting Granthony and Liz did continuously while he was married, sure to God Lynn is aware of how awful these people are? No....probably not.

The issue with the relationship between Anthony and Liz while Anthony was married was not their continuous flirting. That situation actually works. Liz and Anthony flirt. Thérèse gets jealous. This kind of thing happens all the time. The main problem is with Lynn’s story-telling.

The problem that I had as a reader was that virtually every character in the strip expressed the idea that Thérèse was the one at fault and Liz and Anthony were innocents, when it appeared Thérèse was actually the victim. When the same kind of story was done in The Best Years of Our Lives, the Liz-like character is told by her parents to leave the Anthony and Thérèse-like characters alone, and her father even takes the Anthony-like character aside and pressures him to break off all contact with the Liz-like character, which he reluctantly did. That made it work for the audience. The reader has to see that Anthony and Thérèse’s relationship is not working and that Liz would be better for Anthony. But they have to have a character to take the moral stance that Liz and Anthony’s behaviour is wrong and then they have to correct that behaviour. In stark contrast to this, we have Elly and John taking the opposite viewpoint and encouraging Liz to consider Anthony, even though Anthony is married and his wife is pregnant. This leaves only the reader to take up the moral stance, and the consequence is that we think these are awful people.

Thank you for reminding me of that. It seems clear that when Beth is writing the background stories, we always get a more realistic view of life in Milborough. Her Pattersons are allowed to look like jerks and creeps despite instructions from the top to not blame them for things.

True. The best part of those biographies are often the point where we are allowed the glimpse into the details Lynn is leaving out of the strip. With the Warren bio, I never got the idea that Warren was changing jobs all the time and that his family was located in Milborough. That detail makes quite a bit of difference with respect to whether or not Liz's claims to being ignored by Warren are valid.

Her Pattersons are allowed to look like jerks and creeps despite instructions from the top to not blame them for things.

Exactly. In her Paul Wright bio, she added details which spelled out the Patterson parents prejudice against Paul Wright. It's one thing for us fans to interpret that's what is intended, but it is gratifying when someone confirms those interpretations.
