The Key to Romance: Warren Blackwood

The character of Elizabeth Patterson in For Better or For Worse received a lot of criticism for the time when she was dealing with Constable Paul Wright, who got a job transfer to live close to Elizabeth, just as she decided to move back home right after she learned Anthony Caine got a divorce. However, when it comes to a man who has been working to satisfy the mercurial desires of Elizabeth Patterson, there is none like Warren Blackwood.

After flying in to attend Elizabeth’s university graduation, Elizabeth got the idea that because Warren Blackwood flew a helicopter, he could fly into Mtigwaki, the town where she lived in Northwest Ontario, whenever he wanted. Since Warren was living and working in Vancouver at the time, the idea was ridiculous. Nevertheless, Warren Blackwood did eventually try to live up to that promise, only to find that she was dating Constable Paul Wright because she didn’t see Warren often enough.

When Warren reappears, he manages to get Elizabeth to Mtigwaki a day early so she could catch Paul visiting his good friend Susan Dokis. His plan was to break up Liz’s relationship with Paul so he could start one with her. This works and they date, but Warren has to break his second date because of work. This leads to Liz spitting at the phone and immediately running off to ask Anthony Caine on a date.

The work is the issue with Warren and Liz, who wants a man who is a homebody. Then back in March, Warren shows up and announces he has quit his job so he can live close to Liz, thus satisfying her majour complaint about him. This leads to Liz getting engaged to Anthony Caine.

If you think about it, a good deal of Liz’s romantic decisions have been based on the idea that she is trying to get away from / break up with Warren Blackwoodl

That is correct. Warren has the strange idea that Liz should just sit there with her hands folded waiting for him to decide to appear. That Liz shouldn't be a passive lump who has to suck it up and deal with his inconstant attention is not something that would occur to a boor like him.

The stalker and the tease. It’s OK to have him in her apartment. She has the miniature laser-ring at her fingertips. This blaster discharges 9,000 Watts with each flaunt. She will always be safe with the likes of Warren and Howard. Thank you Anthony. You saved the day. Now you and your woman can live happily ever after.

Things could have worked out differently for Warren if this remote section of Ontario had phones.

And, until Liz had her ring, it apparently didn’t occur to Liz or Anthony either.

You are right. Warren is becoming more and more “Howard” –like, with these late-night, “hang around Liz’s apartment until she shows up” kind of thing.

Things could have worked out differently for Warren if this remote section of Ontario had phones.

Warren has been shown using a phone before. As to whether or not Liz would answer any of his calls or return any of his messages, is a different story. I have known women who tried to break off a relationship with a man before, by not returning phone calls, only to discover the man started leaving notes on her front door. We don’t know if this is the case with Warren, or if he just prefers stalking to phone calls, now he lives in Milborough.

What is so ludicrous about all of this is that Warren and Liz have never had more than the most tenuous of relationships.

And yes, thank God Liz had her engagement bling. We all know that if it didn't discharge the blinding glare, she would not have had the spine to get rid of Warren. The ring has magical powers! ::eyeroll::

IRL, when a man who is as pushy as Warren finds out that a woman he wants to be with is engaged...he doesn't take it seriously. He keeps trying to get her to break up. If a man quits his beloved job for a woman, he will not be put off by a mere engagement. He won't quit trying until the woman is married--and maybe not even after that.

Also, does anyone else think maybe Warren is a vampire? He only comes out at night, and screams as if in horrible pain when Liz whips out her ring, which apparently has a halogen bulb inside. This would explain why he quit his job--he can't be out in the daytime--much better than the idiotic idea that he's hung up on Liz, because no one goes years without so much as calling someone they are really crazy about.

qnjones,

Very true. If Warren would go to the trouble of finding out what Paul Wright was doing with Susan Dokis in Mtigwaki, and convincing Liz to go with him “one day early” to catch them in the act of visiting each other; then marriage would certainly be no obstacle to him. Warren kind of reminds me of some other character in the strip, who didn’t let a little thing like marriage get in the way of his pursuit of a woman. I am beginning to develop a theory that all the men who pursue Liz are alike.

Also, does anyone else think maybe Warren is a vampire?

Yes!! Ever since this strip, where Warren looked especially vampire-like.

This means that if Paul had had the chance, he would have stalked Liz while still in a "relationship" with Susan. He did give of the creepy vibe when we first met him so maybe he's not that good a guy after all.

Qnjones, I should have recognized that the blinding light is more likely halogen. Laser light is coherent, so its beam is narrow.

We could have gotten an “I’m engaged to Susan, but I wish you hadn’t run away to Milborough. By the way, here’s an invitation to my wedding.” And if Tina had stuck with Eric Chamberlain, we could have gotten the same thing with Tina inserted for Susan.

As for Warren Blackwood, he is pushing up the creepy factor; but he still has a way to go before he can match Anthony " I always know what is going on in your love life" Caine.

It’s a good rule of thumb to consider any light coming out of Elizabeth’s engagement ring to be incoherent.

"Brilliant" comeback, Howard!

I found your ring light analysis to be quite "illuminating".
