Which Witch is Which?

Today’s reprint of For Better or For Worse is one of two featuring young Michael Patterson’s obsession with Deanna Sobinski. It has a spelling correction in the first panel, where Michael call it “sandwitches”.

In this case, we see Michael is concerned about the smell of his breath. That’s a pretty advanced concern for most young men courting the young ladies. I think I was well into high school before I worried about what a girl would think about my breath. This makes a little more sense in the strip which will probably be reprinted tomorrow, showing Michael trying to snuggle up to Deanna. Even so, it is not typical behaviour for a 6-year-old boy. In general, Lynn Johnston was pretty awful in depicting young Michael Patterson in age-appropriate behaviour. She got better at it later on.

As you can see in this strip involving Duncan and April, the issue of egg breath never comes up, even though they are close to the same age Michael is in today’s strip. The only thing which is consistent is the idea that Elly makes her kids egg sandwiches (or sandwitches, if you prefer the original spelling). The major difference is that young Michael gets a lunch box, while April gets a paper sack. The privilege of being born first.

According to the caption, that's Elizabeth and Duncan.

Which is even more baffling when you consider that she had children at home at this time. She should have asked for more information about them from her husband or whoever looked after the kids while he was at work.

Mistakes like that seem to happen a lot.

I've given up trying to let Steph know about her mistakes since she changed one of them and it was STILL a mistake (She changed "Michael and Elizabeth" (two kids in snow gear) to "Michael and Christopher", instead of the obvious "Elizabeth and Christopher", as Elizabeth is the one who is actually Christopher's age. Plus, that was a girly snow bonnet...)

Well, there is another consistency; Elly's sullen refusal to admit that maybe she shouldn't prepare egg salad sandwiches if her kids don't like them. It would never occur to her to make her life simpler and happier because she combines narcissism, paranoia and idiocy in one package.

With my son's egg allergy, I'd just want to make sure that Elly's kids sat well away from my kid during lunch!

Also, considering that her model for kid behaviour appears to be Dennis the Menace, you would think she would have it a little closer to Hank Ketchum.

I will have to agree with you there. She never fixed the Ted McCauley / McCaulay spelling error on the Who’s Who, or the errors in the Michael / Deanna wedding writeup, or the errors in saying how Grandma Marian died on the website. I stopped pointing them out also.

This would make more sense if Michael were complaining about not wanting vegetables and Elly was taking a hard stand to feed him something healthy, but egg sandwiches?

That would be reason number one in probably a long list of reasons to keep Elly’s kids away from your son.
