Don’t Cry Out Over Spilt Kibble

My first reaction seeing today’s new-run of For Better or For Worse is, “This is what caused Michael to say, ‘Mom! Come quick!’?” No. No. No. This is what causes Michael to walk slowly into where Annie and Elly are sitting and say, “Guess what Lizzie did?”

My second reaction was, “Is that Annie’s son there? I guess he must have been the tar baby who came in with Annie on Monday.” That means that Annie was bringing over Lizzie’s clothes she had washed on a separate trip from bringing over Lizzie.

As for the kibble, it appears that there is a theme when it comes to Elizabeth and kibble if these strips are any indication. With this new-run we get to see the first appearance of Lizzie and kibble. Kibble King has nice alliteration. In the 1983 kibble strip Farley’s brand of kibble was Econo-size Dog Kibble. Personally I prefer Kibble King.

The “know for sure” line seems like a strange way to end today’s strip. Nevertheless, Lynn Johnston has used that same “punch line” in other strips. My favourite part of the strip is that Annie comes in, picks up her son, and leaves. It’s best to limit your children’s exposure to Elly.

And vice-versa: Annie's kid has had even more dramatic age / size / name shifts than either of Elly's. At one point he even separated into two beings, but has since re-merged.

What, of course, bothers me is Elly's scrunched-up face of martyred rage when confronted with a minor mishap that other people would forget; you just know that she's keeping a mental list of all the ways her family are trying to 'sabotage' her, 'destroy her freedom' and 'limit her ability to express herself.' The last time I saw someone jump to a conclusion that stupid, April thought she willed a rotten tree to fall on a house.

I also hate that scrunched-up face of overreaction. Oh, but hey, the role of Elly in the last panel is being played by the Elly of 1992!

That works, although I still think that this strip was the key moment. He changed his name from Christopher to Richard and then he attacked Mike. A loose cannon like that can’t be allowed to live. And the older child of Annie never reappeared in the strip again after this one.

It’s hard to believe that at one time Elly’s facial reactions were one of the best parts of the strip.

Yes, the nose size in particular is the giveaway.
