Banana = Monkey = Michael

My first thought seeing today’s new-run of For Better or For Worse is “choking hazard”. The second thought was to remember this strip where, once again, a banana was associated with a kid making funny noises. My third thought was, “Why is it that I can’t find any references to monkeys or bananas using AMU reprints searching the strips back to 1996, but we have 2 new-runs in the last year using a monkey and banana theme?”

I think the answer this question comes in this strip, where John imitates a monkey while he is at a zoo with Michael. Not only does it prove Elly’s point that this sort of behaviour comes from John’s side of the family, but it is probably the source of the idea for the new-runs. When Lynn Johnston reprinted the zoo strip she must have done something she does not ordinarily do, i.e. read the strip. I think she became so enamored of monkey-oriented humour, she had Lizzie make monkey noises and now Michael. However, the situation has gotten progressively worse with each additional new-run. First Lizzie is just making regular baby noises and Michael hands her a banana. With today’s trip Michael not only associates a banana with monkey noises, but somehow he is gotten it into his head that monkeys put banana peels on their head and dance around. You know the next step is for Elly to put a banana in a casserole while making monkey noises.

It could be even worse; Elly could make a bad pun about how her family is driving her bananas while frowning the bug-eyed frown of existential horror.

Mike got off easy when John displayed embarrassing behaviour at the zoo. It could have been (WARNING: this link should only be clicked if you have brain bleach to hand) so very, very, very much worse.

Oh, yes; the infamous Storegasm. I'd almost forgotten it. It does remind us that John is incapable of controlling his behavior or taking the needs of others to not be mortified into consideration.

I've seen zoo monkeys consuming bananas--whole, peel and all. Lynn and Elly would be mortified. ;)

Actually I think I would have liked that strip better than today’s strip.

There were a few moments like this over the years from John, but the storegasm is one of the worst.

And they still might say it came from John’s side of the family.

I'm SO glad that Lynn decided to keep working so I didn't miss this.

What's the point here? Kids associate monkeys and bananas? Kids like to make silly noises? Parents like to blame their kids' silly behavior on their spouse?

Seems like a slight amount of sound and fury signifying nothing...

I actually thought that Mike playing the fool to amuse his baby sister was kind of sweet.

It’s definitely not part of an ongoing storyline. I look at this strip and yesterday’s strip as basically 2 filler strips to complete the week, where Lynn is relying an well-used standard material.

Michael did put it in his mouth, so that may mean there is something not-so-appealing about those sprinkles Elly used to try to entice Lizzie to eat a banana.

I agree. The only one being insulted today was John, and for once, I actually agree with Elly. Can you imagine Elly making monkey noises?
