Elly’s Gifts for Men

I have to admit that the one area where I find that Lynn Johnston still excels is coming up with humorous product names. With today’s new-run of For Better or For Worse in the area of men’s cologne, we see Him, The Pits, Whiff Man, Testo Sterone, Tough, Male Scent, and Hunk. My favourite is The Pits. I was a little disappointed the only fishing gear name was The Big One. Ultimately Elly purchases After Shave, Homo Sapien and what appears to be an ancient bottle of some sort. I am not sure what Homo Sapien is with the 4-square diagram on the side – some kind of cube game?

The strangest part about this is that Elly seems to have completely forgotten what her brother is like. Cologne, aftershave and fishing equipment for Phil Richards? Hey, Elly! Your brother is a professional musician. Maybe you could buy him something musicians like, for example music. I know it would be hard to find some jazz trumpet music. There’s barely any around. Well, there are musicians like Louis Armstrong, Dizzie Gillespie, Maynard Ferguson, etc.; but they are so obscure. Nobody’s ever heard of them.

Cologne and aftershave are an odd gift for a sister to give to a brother. Those are considered to be somewhat romantic gifts. In my experience, only girlfriends have ever given me those as gifts. Naturally, since Lynn has a tendency to go for examples from her own life to put in her strip, I suspect that these gifts are not really intended for Elly’s brother. Well, Tim Oliphant, now you know what Lynn is getting you for Christmas. She probably wanted to give you “The Big One” but that may be what she is expecting from you.

That would mean that she'd have to take an interest in what he really likes; since she married her kind when she married a man who doesn't know who she is (or cares just so long as she's chained to the kitchen), her enraged apathy will ensure that she ignores his likes and dislikes.

No wonder Elly freaked out when Connie bought Phil a bathrobe. She'd probably been hoping to pass off one of her maternity robes as a "Special Musician's Cloak" or some such nonsense, and now must face the fact that she actually loathes and despises her brother. Apparently to the point that it's impossible for her to ask him via phone or mail what he wants for Christmas.

Jolly way to kick off December, Lynn!

DreadedCandiru2,

This is more than just a like for Phil, it’s how he makes a living. It’s how Lynn’s brother makes his living. However, Elly took a “musician = not marriage material” stance the last time Phil appeared in the strip. It is possible she doesn’t think about Phil’s involvement in music intentionally, as not to encourage his professional musician ways.

Elly considered Connie’s gift to be intimate, and then she buys him cologne, which I would also consider to be intimate. “Despises the brother” may not be the problem here. It might be the exact opposite. After all, why should Elly have already bought gifts for all the other men in her life and not Phil?

Cologne can go either way, I think. I have bought it for boyfriends, true, but I also remember buying my father aftershave a few times when I was a kid, too. My brother's in his 20s and now I just buy him Scotch. I feel like Phil would be into that.

Perhaps, but I notice that you didn't say you had ever bought cologne for your brother.

muzition,

But this would require that Elly either remember her brother's profession or want to encourage him in it. As you well know, people who want to make music for a living should not be encouraged or they will end up like Becky McGuire -- alone and friendless.

I forgot about this before, but I *did* buy my brother aftershave (and shaving foam) this year, actually. He'd just had a rough breakup and is far away so I wanted to send him a little gift.
