I’m Gassed, or I am All A-gassed

Today’s reprint of For Better or For Worse is a gassy blast from the past

1. With very little difficulty, I was able to determine that there are still some full service gas stations in Ontario, but not very many.
2. I don’t know if gas stations will still take a cheque (check). Many of them in Tucson will not.
3. I can remember when cars used to take regular or unleaded, so regular was a choice.
4. At 90 cents a litre, $1.80 is only going to get Elly 2 litres. That won’t get Elly very far, maybe 40 kilometres.

I think the real question now is whether Lynn Johnston would recognize that things have changed at the gas pump since 1980. How long has it been since Lynn Johnston pumped her own gas?

Also, Elly is not carrying a credit or bank card. Who does this?

Quite a while, I'd say; she probably has someone do that for her because she doesn't like to deal with things like that.

As for Clio's question, people who don't pay their own bills don't usually carry plastic.

Clio,

I remember 1980. It was my first year in a university and the kids there were all amazed that they were receiving applications for credit cards in the mail. The practice, prior to that time, had been unheard of. Before then, credit cards were for persons who got them through their bank or some other financial organization by specific application or recommendation. As for bank cards, gasoline stations did not take them to make payments until much later than 1980. In 1980, the banks barely had ATMs for the bank cards. By my recollection of my own mother’s practices in 1980, she would have paid cash for almost everything, except the groceries, where she would make out a check. Plus, gas was so inexpensive then; my mom could have filled her tank for under $10 easily.

Seeing this strip reminds me just how much has changed with gas stations, banking and payments just since 1980. I found I could actually enjoy this strip for its nostalgia, because it does not contain any slams against parenting, husbands or children; like most of the other out-dated strips have.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the case. When Lynn talks about visiting people or going somewhere, she always mentions traveling with someone. Plus, if the Peterborough Examiner article was accurate when it quoted her saying her ex-husband Rod Johnston provided her with a weekly allowance, it is very likely that he may have also taken care of the more mundane activities like putting gas in the car. After all, he would have driven to work as a dentist. Lynn’s studio was either in or very close to where she lived (I am not sure which), and she would not have needed a car to get there.

Back when Kate first came to work with Lynn after Rod had left, her blurb in the "studio" part of the website made a reference to her feeling comfortable at the studio because she had lived there. I think, though, at a certain point, Lynn et. al. had moved out to a separate dwelling that was just down the street from the studio.

aprilp_katje,

That was the impression I had gotten also. I remember at one point, Rod had one address for his train business he had on the side and then there was another address for the For Better or For Worse studio, only they were on the same street and the street numbers were slightly different.
