Too Ugly Even For Elly

I have often wondered if there was a fashion faux pas so heinous that it could surpass the bad taste limits of Elly Patterson’s fashion sense. In today’s reprint of For Better or For Worse, we see that limit. Moreover, the Yahoo colourist did a fine job of using the colours Elly describes, so we can get an even better feeling for how awful John looks. The best part is that the Yahoo colourist also did a purple / red colour combination on Elly’s clothing to make her look more than a little hypocritical for criticizing John’s choice of clothing. The fashion criticism and especially the “AAACK” put this strip easily into the “Cathy rip-off” category so common in the first few years of the strip.

From a long-term perspective, we know that in the 30 years of the strip to come, Elly will far surpass John’s outfit today in terms of some of the awful and frumpy outfits she will eventually wear, particularly in the years after she goes to the permanent bun in her hair. Elly’s concern for what other people will think is out-of-character for her modern self. Normally this is not anything that bothers the woman who regularly shrieks and screams at her husband, kids and animals in public forums. Ironically, Thérèse Caine will eventually be criticized for doing exactly the same thing Elly is doing here.

What's more, John will end up as a far better dresser; I mean, he's still wearing fairly ugly clothes but standing next to her, he looks great.

Psst... Yahoo doesn't have a colorist. There are a couple of coloring houses that do the coloring for the comics syndicates. Yahoo just gets its comics from gocomics.com. The colorist in question is whoever serves LJ's syndicate.

This is one of the mysterious aspects of Elly as she gets older. Lynn Johnston put that giant nose on her avatar, put her hair in a permanent bun, and then started dressing her like she was woman in her 90s, much worse than Lynn dresses herself. Lynn has said that she thinks giant noses are funny; however, I don’t remember if she ever gave a reason for the rest of it.

John Patterson, in contrast, remains remarkably unchanged over the years.

I am aware of that. However, I don’t know the colouring house that works with Lynn Johnston’s syndicate, so I like to call the person the Yahoo colourist for fun. I prefer it to “unknown colourist working for a colouring house working for Lynn Johnston’s syndicate.”

Okay, then--carry on. :)

Yes! My very first thought was "gee, how Therese-like--trying to change her husband".

Of course, Elly never will bother about the gross eating habits, as that is also how she eats.

If she wasn't ripping off the Cathy comic strip, I don't think Elly would care about the clothes either. This is a strip I could easily see with Cathy and Irving in it, instead of Elly and John.

Fun with Google ads: I chose to have comments for this entry e-mailed to me. My Gmail account, no doubt based on the title of the entry, gave me an ad for Uglydolls.

Looking at the ugly doll website, I can see where the mutant residents of Milborough reside when they are not in the backgrounds of For Better or For Worse,
