Empty Nest Syndrom Starts Early With Pattersons

New Run Status: 3 ½ new-runs to go

Elly can see the empty nest already in today’s reprint of For Better or For Worse. Ironically, 30 years of the strip later, and Elly never gets to see her empty nest. In fact, all her kids move back in, and she moves out. That makes this strip especially funny.

When my kids were little, I would something think things like, “How old will I be when they go to university, or grad school, or get married, or have kids themselves?” Usually the answers to those questions were a little depressing. However, I can honestly say that those thoughts never occurred thanks to seeing my kids cross the street by themselves.

Almost as funny as remembering that, despite everything, she never found the time to finish University or have a real career. She took course after course but never had the staying power to do what she wanted to.

Heh. I like the "New-Run Status" feature. Incidentally, I use the training log offered at the runnersworld.com site. I do a double take sometimes when I see the button marked "new run entry." :)

She did get to own and operate Lilliput’s for a period of time. For Elly, I think that was the point where she realized she didn’t want to have a career, despite everything she had said prior to that point. She took over Lilliput’s in July, 2000. By 2003, she was talking about retiring. It was pretty clear from the way she handled the Kortney Krelbutz situation that the person really running the store show was long-time employee Moira Kinney.

Funny. Well, we have to enjoy those new-runs while we can. If Lynn’s response in today’s Coffee Talk is any indication, we are getting close to having straight reprints.

I just wish she'd make whatever announcement she's going to make--so I can plan FOOBAR accordingly. :)

Well, you know Lynn. Remember when she made announcements about what the hybrid was going to be to different papers and they all said different things? And then after she started the hybrid, she changed it from stories modern characters were telling about old times, to random stuff occasonally gathered around a theme. I figure the only way we will know when she goes to straight reprints for sure, is when we don't see any more new-runs.

Good point. For all we know, her next announcement will be her innovative program of "screw-runs," which will be new-runs with 95% more John hate. And then two weeks later, she'll realize she wants to take even more vacations and go to straight repeats. ;)
