April Fools' Day

It only seems appropriate that on April Fools' Day, Elly Patterson is making herself gorgeous. Elly’s looks gorgeous. April Fools!

Now for most people, looking gorgeous would mean dressing well, wearing your best makeup and doing up your hair in a difficult fashion. For Elly Patterson, it means all that, plus, thanks to the wizardry of Lynn Johnston artwork, changing the whole way you look. Her jaw shape is changed, her lips are changed, her nose is changed, her eyes are changed, her hair line has changed, and not only that but she has cleavage unsupported by any evident bra. Honestly, looking at Panel 1 in today’s reprint of For Better or For Worse, I wondered who the pretty woman was. In panel 2, she was still attractive but not as much as panel 1.

Young Michael makes the comment that it would take a long time to make his mother look gorgeous. It’s supposed to be youthful honesty which ends up insulting Elly. The truth of the matter is that if Elly pops out of the washroom looking like that, young Michael would be impressed at his mother’s ability to perform miracles on her appearance. Either that, or he would just wonder who the strange woman in the washroom was.

After all that, then just for fun, Lynn added a hanging basket with a dead plant right beside the toilet in the background. No doubt the fumes from people sitting on that toilet did the poor plant in.

Whatever it is, it just does not ring true for Mike to say something like that. I could buy John saying that if he felt especially over-confident and suicidal; a real five-year-old would repeat what Mike said in panel 1 but with slightly greater emphasis on his rapidly-filling bladder.

Very true. My 11-year-old daughter might make a comment like that, but when she was 4, it would never have occurred to her. It is another strip in the Lynn’s long legacy of strips having to do with Elly and her lack of confidence over her appearance. Everyone character is Lynn Johnston, even 4-year-old boys.

This strip came so early in the first year, LJ had not settled upon a consistent look for Elly. Of course, that's an excellent reason not to insert this repeat now. But we already know how little she cares about consistency.

It was an odd time, when I look at those strips. Elly would occasionally look dressed up and pretty. John and Elly would go to fancy parties with other well-dressed people. It was probably the only time in the strip when that happened.

Remembering poor April on her birthday. Having to share the one bathroom in the tiny train house with her parents. Considering their diet....

(You KNOW they never created that wonderful suite in the basement.)

Suddenly I get the impression that April may have started using the showers at school.

(You KNOW they never created that wonderful suite in the basement.)

Of course. Even when they talked about it in the old monthly letters, Elly went on about how she planned to use it as an apartment more than than as a place for April to stay when she was home from university. I have a feeling it will done AFTER April has left for university.

Of course it will. Elly seems to not want to realize that she owes April more than empty promises. She'll never acknowledge that it wasn't April's fault that her big plans got interrupted; knowing her as well as I do, she'd have gotten bored with working at the library anyway.
