Fred the Traveling Fish

In today’s For Better or For Worse, we see young Michael and young Lawrence taking Fred the fish out for a spin on the old wagon. This is another thing I wouldn’t have done with a fish in my house. For one thing, even a small fish bowl filled with water is heavy. When my kids first got fish about 4 years ago, they were 9 and 6 respectively, and it would have been dangerous for them to lift their fish bowls because of the weight. Not only that but fish bowls don’t have any good places to hold them. I guess Mike and Lawrence are made of sturdier stuff and managed to get the fish bowl on to that wagon.

As I look at these backgrounds, I think I owe Laura Piché an apology. I used to complain about her drawing everything in the background with a straight edge. Now with Lynn 100%in charge of the art, I can see that all that straight-edging was because of Lynn Johston. Sorry, Laura!

howard,

Once again, we see Lynn's inability to put herself in a five-year old's shoes come in to play. She could easily lift the bowl and put in a wagon so she assumes that a small child could as well despite Mike being two feet shorter and at least one hundred pounds lighter. Her failure to do the research is still as much a part of the new-runs as silhouettes, blank backgrounds and stright-edges.

dreadedcandiru2,

At least in interviews, when she talked about the new-runs, she said she liked it better because she didn't plan to do any research or drawing off models, as she did for the modern-day Pattersons. I had no expectation for research with the new-runs; however, I am beginning to think that common sense also no longer applies.

howard,

Of course common sense no longer applies; we're not discussing the adventures of real people any more. We parted company with them last Sunday; when we talk about the Pattersons now, we're talking about cartoon characters who might as well hang out with Fat Albert, Bugs Bunny and Kim Possible.

dreadedcandiru2,

But Fat Albert, Bugs Bunny and Kim Possible were all better drawn and written than a new-run.

Wow. Her greatest dream is to write a strip like this one? We've just endured a week of boring, tepid strips about a goldfish. What next? Elly ponders dryer lint?

Retire, Lynn. Take a cruise by yourself, or bribe one of your children to go with you. Life outside the studio is fun, I swear, even without a husband. Really. You are not required to be married to travel or socialize. I swear.

I think her greatest dream is to keep on making as much money as possible with as little effort as possible. We have seen her chop her staff down to nothing, and not paying those salaries may make up for the 2% of the newspapers her syndicates says that she has lost going to new-runs.

She already knows this. This is why we have the new-runs. It’s her love of the time off which is getting us. If she was completely tied to the studio, doing brand new stuff every day, then these reprints and hybrids and new-runs would not exist.

I thought she used the weeks of reruns to give her time to do a slew of interviews wherein she says her personal life is nobody's business, and then proceeds to tell a whole bunch of personal stuff about her family and ex-husband?

Just sayin', if she retired, she could do that AND go on a cruise. Which I thought she said she couldn't do anymore because she was divorced.

Well, she has time to do translating for 2 weeks for medical missionaries, but she doesn't have time for a cruise? I doubt it. She doesn't have time for a cruise, when she needs to blame her ex-husband for something.
