Early Morning Wakeup Call

When I was 6 years old, I got up every morning at 6 am. I would go into my parents’ bedroom and wake them up. It drove my father crazy, particularly on weekends, when he didn’t have to get up. At age 12, my boy went through a similar stage, except for him it was at 4 am and he had to be talked into going back to bed every night. That was quite tiring.

In today’s For Better or For Worse, after 2 solid weeks of Michael the brat, we actually have a scene where Michael is cute and somewhat charming. Is it a fluke, or will there be more?

I don't know. I hope so. I'd noticed two things which bothered me, though. First, no John. Instead of helping out, he just headed out the door and let his under-the-weather wife handle things, the clod. Second, if she isn't sick, she's probably sleeping something off.

We can presume “under-the-weather” from the way Elly is drawn, but she does not actually say anything to indicate she is sick. Instead the punch line implies she is not sick, but needed to be treated like she was 5. As for John, it is easy to pick on him for not helping out; however, my wife is a stay-at-home mom like Elly was at this time, and most days I have to leave for work before my wife and kids get up to be at school by 8:30. Since John has his own business, I could easily see him having to do the same thing. I don’t really have a problem with John not helping out in this instance, unless Elly really is under-the-weather.

Anon NYC,

That’s an interesting article and certainly matches some things I have seen. I remember a neighbourhood kid when I was growing up, who constantly caused problems at school, and he made poor grades. Then when graduated from high school, and his parents booted him out of the house, he suddenly came to the realization that he was going to have to work jobs he didn’t want to work in order to survive. He went to the local university and got straight A grades, which he probably was capable of doing the whole time.

Remember when I mentioned that sequence in "There goes my baby" when John was recovering from throwing his back out? The strip that had Elly shoo the kids away because he needed the rest which endedhwith him wondering what he'd done to keep them from cheering him up? I can imagine an earlier attempt at failed charity: John turning her alarm clock off! A lot of the time, people do stuff like that because they think they're helping.

That could be funny. You should suggest it to Lynn.
