Mike Takes One to the Eye

Back in For Better or For Worse on May 1, 2005, Michael Patterson took a yo-yo to his right eye thanks to his daughter. Thanks to today’s strip, we can tell the Patterson women have a thing out for Mike’s right eye. We can also tell that Michael hasn’t learned anything in the last 20 years when it comes to small children and potential injuries.

Michael's an idiot who can't and won't think things through. Back in the day, he didn't realize that a small child would smack him in the face without intending to and as an adult, he still doesn't know that small children lack hand-eye coordination. What's more, he won't learn from his mistakes. Being Elly's child, he sees that as giving in. He may not shriek at non-events, conflict may cause him to take tongue in teeth and run but he will not let other people win by admitting that they're right and he is not.

As to how much Mike retains in his memory from 20 years, I don't know. Judging from Liz's story, clearly Pattersons can remember pretty far back.

As for people taking injuries from small children and not learning from them, I don't see that happening if it hurt quite a bit. When my boy first learned to run, he would run right at you, expecting you to stop him and he was at just the right height to do some damage to some tender places. The first time you get caught not paying attention in such a situation is the last. After that, I always kept an eye out for him running at me.

Michael is too wrapped up in himself to be vigilant, I'm afraid. Somewhere along the way, the kid who guarded his face against a repeat of WHAP-Gwowg! grew into the man with the delusions of invincibilty. I can't remember exactly when off the top of my head but he somehow forgot the hard-won wisdom that actions have consequences.

I can't speak for Michael Patterson, but as an adult, I learned about the deadly, dangerous baby, with their little tiny, razor-sharp fingernails. This was a lesson in the first few months my son was alive, and after that we kept his nails cut short. The fact we haven't seen more Michael Patterson injuries from Robin and Merrie, is only an indication of his lack of involvement in his kids. Deanna got the treatment much earlier on with the child who bit when she nursed.

If you're never around someone all that much, you don't know what they're capable of so that makes more sense than him thinking he's from Krypton. Deanna sees quite a different little girl because she's around her more often.

dreadedcandiru2,

Of course this could actually be just Lynn Johnston’s version of the Injury to the Eye motif.
