Another Farley Abuse Strip

Some months back, I wrote into the For Better or For Worse Coffee Talk community to complain about the disturbing trend in the strip’s new-runs to show Farley the dog being abused and I specifically mentioned this strip with Elly brushing Farley as an example. Since then, we have had Farley forced into wearing women’s underwear, Farley getting shaved, and Farley frightened by lightning (which isn’t all that bad).

And then we have today’s new-run in For Better or For Worse with the most blatant example of Farley abuse to date. At the end of 6 solid panels of Elly screaming at Farley, Farley ends the sequence by licking Elly’s feet, which is a geniune sign of affection for a dog, or an inclination to lick the feet for the salty taste. Although after taking a good look at Elly’s naked feet, I can easily see why it is that Lynn most often has Elly wearing shoes or socks. Those things are hideous, but they do look very salty.

What bothers me the most is that the people on CT will ignore the yelling and focus on the last two panels; as always, they only seem to focus on what's in their experience set.

These strips make me wish one could call the the Animal Cops on a cartoon character.

Dang. I'd forgotten about that first one. There's just so much *anger* over really minor things.

There's no need for "the horrors! the horrors!" over a dog, outside, getting a bit (or even a lot!) messy. But you can just see Elly *coming after* Farley with that brush. And to make matters worse, that strip would have worked as well with Elly calmly going outside for the purpose of doing a dog-brushing chore.

Similarly, what's with the anger over a chewed-up bath toy? I could see getting really upset if he'd destroyed Lizzie's bunny (her only really important toy). Not that that would have made the tirade more useless, but the emotion would be understandable.

And the idea that others have to approve of Elly's inappropriate actions or reactions (making Mike say it's *good* to toss his candy...) is disturbing.

You’re saying that they will say, “My dog licks my toes like that after I beat him too. You must have a camera in house.” I can completely believe that will be the response.

Clio,

That’s exactly what I feel like. Of course, if I write to the Coffee Talk, I feel like I am the Animal Cop.

That has been a trend lately. She did the same thing with the burial of Frank the Fish.

I'd expect a general, glossed over sentiment such as "Oh, Lynne! You've captured the wonderful, unconditional love of dogs! Once again, you've made me cry! Please keep doing your wonderful column!"

Same here; like I said, they're not going to take Elly's blind rage any more seriously than they did her confiscating Mike's candy.

And anyone who does take it seriously will be told to lighten up, since "it's just a comic strip."

One time there was a Farley abuse strip, didn't someone write in saying kicking dogs was normal and people shouldn't get worked up about it? I fear we may be in for more of that.

Yup. We were supposed to believe that the kick was a gentle bunt and no biggie. KAN will go to any lengths to defend their idol.
