Watch Those Hands!

My perverted brain looked at yesterday’s strip with young Michael’s hands full of hair gel to give Farley the dog a Mohawk. I don’t know why it did not occur to me sooner, but the final panel looks like Michael is putting his hand on an improper place with Farley in the last panel. So, in today’s For Better or For Worse, I was distracted by the placement of young Michael’s hand in every panel. It is my imagination, or is Michael wiping his hands on John Patterson’s pants? In panel 3, he seems particularly intent on something.

As on September 24, 2008; today’s new-run features something rarely seen in the original For Better or For Worse, i.e. John and Michael talking about something important to Michael, his problem with girls. In September, the girl was his little sister Elizabeth. Today, I presume it is Deanna Sobinski, but the strip does not tell us anything more than it is a girl. With this, the second week dealing with the move of Deanna, I suspect Lynn may be moving past the point of no return on the reprint strips to come in the next 3 years that featured Deanna before she disappeared. Elly’s weekly letter discussed it this week, and now John and Mike are talking about it. That means we are going to dwell on it for the rest of the week. Oh goody!

This, of course, means that Lynn has decided to give us an alternate timeline without telling us up front. She's just joined Lucas in having such a lack of confidence in her own work that she had to tinker with it.

I think what drives me nuts about the new strips in the retread is there is a lot of talking about how people feel, but these strips almost never add any real interesting action on major storylines. The stories aren't advanced. It's just a lot of emotional blather.

Personally, I think the reason Dee had to decamp to Burlington was to get a bunch of plastic surgery. The child Dee has much larger, coarser, plainer features than the grownup Dee. And there's no way that Dee and her sister got their looks from their parents. I think they got them from a plastic surgeon as part of Mira's social climbing campaign.

DreadedCandiru2,

You imply that Lynn knew she was doing an alternative timeline. I am not so sure she knew that when she was writing the strips for last week and this week.

She's just joined Lucas in having such a lack of confidence in her own work that she had to tinker with it.

Lucas seemed to be aware of how what he was doing fit into his storyline. With Lynn, I have this feeling if someone were to tell her, “Deanna doesn’t leave for 4 more years” she would find it surprising.

qnjones,

That’s certainly true, and who would have expected all these heart-to-hearts between Michael and John. Modern John barely speaks to his son, and (as is my favourite thing to note) never said word one to Michael about reading any of his novels.

The child Dee has much larger, coarser, plainer features than the grownup Dee.

It got worse as the 4 years progressed. Little Deanna looked vastly different from year-to-year and still never looked anything like grown-up Deanna.

And there's no way that Dee and her sister got their looks from their parents. I think they got them from a plastic surgeon as part of Mira's social climbing campaign.

The things is, Deanna did look a little like her original blonde mother, Eva. The only thing she got from Mira was those giant lips. The upside of having Deanna in the family though, is that both April and Liz went to the same giant lip surgeon and occasionally sported lips of loveliness like Deanna. Why Meredith had giant lips is a different story (I hope).
