Trust Me…He Trusts Me

First of all, I am pleased to see in today's For Better or For Worse, that Liz didn’t buckle into Warren’s pressure and let him spend the night. Obviously he has suckered Liz into allowing him into her apartment late at night where he could answer the phone and say where Anthony can hear him, “I think it’s the OTHER man in your life!” and royally screw over Liz. Possibly he thinks he can pick up the pieces of the relationship, if Anthony goes ballistic and does not believe Liz when she says, “Warren is just a friend.” After all, how many times have we heard that phrase out of Liz when it was the truth? I would say, “None is the answer.”

On the other hand, it will be a real test of Anthony and Liz’s relationship. Liz said in this strip, talking to Candace that Anthony is learning to trust again after what Thérèse did to him, and she proclaimed to Candace that Anthony trusted her. Now, we get to see if what Liz said to Candace was true. Does Liz really know what her relationship with Anthony is like?

If Liz was right, then it could be that the Saturday strip will show Liz saying, “Oh that person who answered the phone is Warren Blackwood, the guy who shows up once a year to ask me date him and then he goes away again. He just barged in here, and now he’s leaving.” And Anthony says, “I trust what you’re saying is completely true. You are a blessing to me and my family and not some cheating woman like my ex-wife was.” Then we the readers will understand because we have actually been shown (and not told for a change) that Anthony and Elizabeth trust each other completely. Wouldn’t that be a nice way to end the week?

Somehow, I suspect this is not the way it is going to go on Saturday. Bring on the cheap theatrics Lynn!!!

Actually, I expect Lynn to be too lazy to go through with any cheap theatrics. The easy way is to just have Anthony insist he trusts Liz, and have that be the end of it.

This whole storyline is made even more ludicrous by the way Liz looks in these strips: like a younger version of Ugly Elly. In reality, a guy like Warren would take one look at her and say, "Ugh, I quit my job for you?!?"

I'm home now, but still not in the frame of mind to play Idiot Liz. You all may carry on without me; you're doing a fine job, from what I've read. I'm not sure when I will be in a position to do it again. I am still quite out of it, and have midterms to take next week.

We still don't have a cause of death for my sister. The ME is saying it may be three or four months before labs come back and they finalize the death certificate. Everyone expects it to be "undetermined cause." Which leaves me feeling like this whole thing isn't real. As I was cleaning out her underwear drawer, I kept expecting her to come home and yell at me for throwing out her lingerie. Nevertheless, I'm not sleeping. The problems of Liz Patterson, Congenital Moron, don't really interest me. Which is too bad. This is as exciting as the strip has been in years.

Wow, that's nice. Classy, even. Do you have that "beauty standard" I could borrow to know which people deserve love based on how they look?

Liz is a selfish, passive-aggressive turd. Her character makes her unlovely and worthless, not her Lynn's dubious "art."

Didn't something similar happen when Mike broke up with Rhetta? He rang her and some guy picked up the phone and then he never talked to her again. So it's odd to me that the same situation is being played again, but this time it's just a horrible understanding. And it's a pity that Rhetta never got the benefit of the doubt.

Caramello.

I expect that Liz will try and fail to extricate herself from the mess her inability to break things of got her into. By not flat out telling him to sod the Hell off last year, she set herself up for this painful little reverse. That's what you get for chickening out and blowing raspberries at telephones.

That may very well be true, if Lynn want the readers to know that Liz really does know and understand her relationship with Anthony. However, there is the other side of Lynn which seems to be desperate to add as many delays as possible to Liz and Anthony’s engagement / wedding and that Lynn may not be able to resist some theatrics. We’ll see tomorrow.

I concur with Anon NYC, I am so glad you stopped in to tell us how things are going with you. I also hope you ace those exams.

qnjones can correct me if I am wrong, however, I believe her opinion on Liz’s appearance is predicated on the phrase “a guy like Warren”, and not her own personal opinion of who does or does not deserve love.

You can see it in this link . It is similar, except Mike was specifically told Rhetta was out on a date. I agree with you that Mike accepted this as fact and never questioned whether Rhetta was really on a date or not. He was too excited to have a loophole which allowed him to pursue Deanna.

Possibly telling Warren this might have worked, but Liz gave him a good-bye after Warren met Paul, and Warren still showed up later interested in Liz, when he found out Paul was cheating on Liz. Warren may have an expectation that every man Liz gets involved with will cheat eventually.

This makes me wonder if John had the same expectation about Elly thirty-odd years ago. That might have been the real reason that he waited until she was in her fifties to relent on the work outside the home issue. He may have had a reasonable fear that Elly would get entangled more or less against her will with some jerk.

As I remember it, Elly had quite a few work-outside-home moments before she was in her 50s. I don’t know that John would have the same expectation as far as getting entangled with jerks. Elizabeth is a lot more passive than Elly is, and her romantic history is filled with cheaters and jerks. Elly, as far as I can tell, never had a man other than John.

I think this is going to be interesting in contrast to how much Liz "trusted" Paul. All she did was listen to innuendo and saw Paul in broad daylight at Susan's and believed right away he was cheating.

So now, we have Anthony calling Liz late, late at night and having someone who seems to be VERY comfortable answering the phone.

Unfortunately, Anthony will of course go into Saint Anthony mode.

We saw a similar episode with April, when she found out Gerald was playing a number at a charity with Becky, and immediately turned on him. It’s quite a contrast with Eric Chamberlain, where Liz was told repeatedly that he was cheating and refused to believe it.

Unfortunately, Anthony will of course go into Saint Anthony mode.

It depends on how Lynn plans to play this. If she goes all soap opera on us, then we will have a temporary breakup followed by a makeup session when the truth is revealed.

Yes. You're right about that; both John and Elly married the first person they ever really dated. From what I understand, they didn't have too active a social life in high school because the two of them were probably working so as to save money for University.

From the Who’s Who on Carrie Patterson we get:

John was a serious student whose interests revolved around the Science Club, rock 'n roll music and his beloved HO model train.
So, yes. I would say John’s social life was pretty limited.

John took his Science degree at the University of Manitoba, and to the surprise and delight of his parents, applied for and was accepted into Dentistry at the University of Toronto afterward.
Proud as they were of him, they couldn't give John much financial help, with Bev already in the second year of her Agriculture degree at the U of M. Nor would he accept it. He was grateful for the solid start they had given him, but determined to earn his own way from then on. He did accept Will's help in finding him summer jobs in the mines up north, and with the additional aid of student loans, he managed an adequate if frugal lifestyle as a student.

The implication from this is that Will and Carrie paid for the Science degree at the local province university; but did not give John much for his education past that point. It doesn’t mention John’s own savings, but I infer that John did not save much money.

As for Elly, last September, this strip was reprinted showing her mother disapproved of her quitting university to get married. I take it from this that Elly had the money from her parents to finish (otherwise Marian would have no reason to complain), but chose to support John in his education instead.

This is exactly right. It's not my personal beauty standard. But I've been an observer of the behavior of men for 30 years now, and one thing I've noticed: men generally only develop this kind of obsessive love over really beautiful women. Warren has been portrayed as lusting after gorgeous models while escorting Liz (the party at Weed's), so he fits that type.

And it does bug me that Lynn constantly uglifies Liz in a manner not in keeping with her age. Girls her age do not dress like that. They don't wear buns, they don't wear mom jeans, they don't wear their mom's hand-me-down sweaters with buttondown blouses underneath. Not my standard, just an observation.

How nice to be pounced on by a cowardly nonny with a hair trigger temper, though.

Thanks for all the well wishes from the rest of you. Talk soon.
